General Information about Provo
Located 575 miles southeast of Miami, the Turks & Caicos Islands are a British Commonwealth Colony that were first populated by the Lucayan or Arawak Indians. Columbus claimed the islands for the Spanish in 1492. In 1670, Spain ceded the islands to Britain. The islands were a dependency of the Bahamas until 1874 when control was assumed by the Jamaican government. In 1962 they became a British Commonwealth Colony, now referred to as British Overseas territory.
The islands are self-governing, with British diplomatic representation provided by a resident Governor. The seat of government and the Governor's mansion are based in the country's capital, Grand Turk.
Dive Sites and Marine Life
Dive Provo has the most comprehensive dive schedule on island. We dive multiple areas around Provo, with each area having a number of interesting and beautiful sites. Where we dive on any given day is dependant upon where divers have already been and where they want to go. We try to rotate everyone around the various areas as each is unique and beautiful in it's own way.
Marine Life
A large area of the coast of Provo comprises the Princess Alexandra National Park within which there is no commercial or sport fishing allowed. As a result the diver benefits from a profusion of marine life, much of which remains undisturbed in its reef habitat by visiting divers. Even outside the boundaries of the Princess Alexandra National Park the dive operators all happily support a policy of reef preservation and conservation.
